Leg Rowers, Inle Lake, Burma, 2007

Using the leg to grip the oar is a skill learnt in childhood, enabling the use of both hands to position the cone shaped net. The leg rowers and their families live all around the perimeter of the lake in what are called floating villages. To build their houses and grow vegetables, soil is taken from the bank and deposited in the lake to make a platform island which is then pinned down with long poles.
