ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH
Manikarnika Ghat, Varanasi, India, 2016
Manikarnika is the main place of cremation on the Ganges’ bank. It is believed that to die and be cremated here breaks the continuous cycle of death and re-birth, the spirit then free to move to the next plane of existence. The lone boat ‘hovering’ between river and sky could be the mythical ferryman. The streaks you see in the sky are the result of making a mistake when I developed the negative. I was actually devastated when I looked at the roll of film….all ruined, and yet, this one frame looked as if it might yield something a bit different…..
Silver gelatin print on Fomabrom baryta double-weight fibre-based paper.
35mm negative taken with a Leica M6 and 35mm F1.4 leitz lens.
