  • ABOUT THE PHOTOGRAPH

Shivratri (the night of Shiva) is a Hindu festival in honour of the marriage of the God Shiva to Parvati. It also marks the start of spring and renewal.

It is quiet here in the early morning, but the sadhus (holy men) are
awake and sitting at the side of the road behind their fires. I was trying to photograph the two singers with peacock feathers on their heads who travel around India singing devotional songs, when a woman carrying a bucket of water walked into my picture….an unexpected gift.
